Occupy Boston Daily Digest for 4-7-12

    Good Morning from Occupy Boston!

Stories of the Day: The ranks of Europe’s working poor are increasing rapidly: a growing slice of the population is slipping through Europe’s long-vaunted social safety net, which was designed for the unemployed, not the underemployed. And a sad story from Greece: A Greek retiree shot himself dead in the busiest public square in Athens during morning rush hour Wednesday, leaving a note police said linked his suicide with the country’s acute financial woes. Hours later, more than 1,500 anti-austerity protesters gathered in the square, responding to social media calls for peaceful demonstrations accusing Greek politicians of driving people to despair with harsh cutbacks implemented to secure vital international bailouts. And two follow-ups to previously mentioned stories: the FDA deliberately erased 1 million signatures and comments on the ‘Just Label It’ campaign calling for the labeling of genetically modified foods. And Occupy Wall Street activists respond to the 99% Spring.

Other Occupies/Protests: Occupy Worcester Occupies City Hall: April 15 at 8pm until April 22 at 10am. The American Spring is here! Riding off of our Tax Day protest on April 15th, Occupy Worcester will be making a push to maintain a consistent outdoor presence on the sidewalk in front of city hall for the week leading up to our Occupy Earth Day event on April 22nd. We will be outside in front of city hall protesting the social, economic, and environmental injustices plaguing this country and the world, handing out information and literature on these issues, and starting up one on one conversations with the people on the street to get to know them and their concerns and introduce ourselves.

“Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor, it must be demanded by the oppressed.”  Martin Luther King, Jr.

    Volunteer Opportunities/Announcements:

Help support Camp Charlie! Protesters need healthy food, water, hand warmers, sweaters, blankets, duct tape, and you! Also musicians needed, acoustic only. Bring friends/bands/instruments…sorry, no power.  And if anyone has time over the next 8 days to come by for any amount of time and help out by sitting at the Info table to talk to people that would be great!

Last day to enter the Occupier’s Haiku Contest! Send submissions to submit@occupier.com, no more than 3 haikus per person. For rules, click here. Prizes!

For a partial listing of Working Groups looking for volunteers, please click here!

    Upcoming Events:

    • Sunday, April 8, at 2pm at Camp Charlie, in front of the Occupied State House, Occupy Boston will hold a mock hearing on the MBTA.  Bring/wear a suit or a reason why they should put the fares back … and a loud voice.  After, we’re planning a “Back to the Future” event where we’ll try to remember what life was when we had trains.
    • Raise Taxes on the 1% Tax Day Rally and March, Tuesday, April 17, 5:30PM, Dewey Square (South Station). Occupy JP and Occupy Boston will participate, along with many other groups, in a protest against the unfairness of the current tax regime, where people such as Mitt Romney pay at rates far lower than those earning far less, and Warren Buffet’s now-famous secretary pays at a higher rate than Warren Buffet.  The Rally and March will begin at 5:30pm at Dewey Square (South Station) and the march will begin at 6pm and proceed through the city streets, pass by several notorious corporate tax dodgers, and end at the bandstand in the Commons. Things to bring:  yourself (most important), signs, noise-making stuff (pots, pans, kazoos, whatever)

    Saturday, April 7, 2012

    Event Highlights:

Please note that many new events are being added to the website; check https://www.occupyboston.org for the latest information!

    • Making Sense of the MBTA Mess, What Happened and What We Can Still Do About It: Potluck and Teach-in at Camp Charlie. 1pm-4pm on the State House steps.  1pm – 4pm, at Camp Charlie at the State House. Bring a dish to share (we’ll also have some food donated by our friends). Afterwards, we’ll have a number of teach-ins about the fight to save the T and the broader struggle for transit justice. Contact: Josh Golin (golingolin@yahoo.com)
    • [Ongoing] Occupation of State House Steps for Public Transportation, April 5 – 14, 2012, Camp Charlie at the State House. On April 4, Occupy the MBTA, a working group of Occupy Boston, launched Camp Charlie, a ten-day occupation of the Massachusetts State House steps to protest fare-hikes and service cutbacks on the MBTA. Having survived the depths of the recession, the 99% now faces additional taxes in the form of escalating T fares and the loss of essential transport routes. This is a further transfer of public wealth to the banks. These are the same institutions that were bailed out by the American taxpayer after being rendered insolvent by their own, criminal recklessness. The only debt in need of servicing is their debt to us. In a country that lavishes four billion dollars in subsidies on the oil companies, the relentless assault on public transport could not make less sense – ethically, environmentally, or otherwise. Camp Charlie will be a place for public debate, conversation, and outreach – a living testament to the refusal of the people to be further abused by a clutch of corporate interests, multinational banking cartels and consolidated oil interests.

Other Occupies/Protests: OWS and Occupy Student Debt are having an NYC Kiss-In! Saturday, April 7th, at 1 pm. If the banks can make out like bandits, so can we. Students and folks with student debt in groups around the country will kiss in public spaces to protest the out of control tuition hikes and education cuts that are plaguing the country. This is a creative and effective way that we as students can bring awareness to this issue that is so often ignored. Find out more at http://occupystudentdebtcampaign.org and http://1tday.org. April 7 is the day student loan debt passes the $1 trillion mark.

Occupy Boston stands in solidarity with actions nationally that attempt to secure public transportation as a right.

    Event Highlights:

    • Good Friday – Way of the Cross – Procession and Vigil for Nonviolence, 12pm – 3pm. Procession begins at Dewey Square, ends at State House. Sponsored for over 20 years by the Agape Community (Hardwick, MA), House of Peace (Ipswich MA), Pax Christi MA in our first collaboration with the Protest Chaplains of Occupy Boston The first half of the vigil will consist of a procession through Boston’s financial district calling for the faithful to repentance for the violence of economic injustice. Through the traditional Christian practice of The Way of the Cross, we will meditate on modern “crucifixions” caused by both corporate greed and our own greed. We will highlight the devastating toll of economic injustice on the 99% and reflect on our own complicity in economic structures that cause suffering at home and abroad. The procession will become a stationary vigil at the Massachusetts State House by 1:30pm. Themes of reflection will include the death penalty, a violence Jesus suffered but never recommended; homelessness in Boston (led by a homeless outreach psychiatrist from Boston); the violence of war (often led by a member of Veterans for Peace); human rights; women’s rights – human trafficking and sexual slavery; dominative power in the church. Procession begins at Dewey Square, travels through the financial district, and ends at the Massachusetts State House front steps. Occupy Boston Daily Digest for 4-5-12

    Good Morning from Occupy Boston!

Stories of the Day: MBTA Okays Fare Hikes and Service Cuts. Occupy Boston has officially declared a ten-day occupation in front of the MA State House front steps. We’re demanding that our legislature save the T by April 14. No hikes, no cuts, no layoffs! And Police pepper-spray 30 Santa Monica College students and others who were protesting tuition hikes – including this four-year-old girl. Two people were transported to the hospital. College officials are investigating campus police’s reaction to students who disrupted a Board of Trustees meeting upset over a highly controversial plan to offer pricier classes. The five Republican Supreme Court justices ruled on 4/2 to defend the rights of prison guards to strip search people, including a nun arrested in an anti-war protest and an African-American man who got arrested by mistake for not paying a fine that he had actually paid. And a follow-up: more information on the people behind Occupy.com which was mentioned in yesterday’s digest. “Seasoned OWS activists view [the site] with a mixture of hope and skepticism.

Other Occupies/Protests: Truckers vow to “bring Britain to a halt” in support of striking tanker drivers by blockading refineries and motorways.

“The end of Democracy and the defeat of the American Revolution will occur when government falls into the hands of lending institutions and moneyed incorporations.” Thomas Jefferson

Occupy Boston Daily Digest for 4-4-12

    Good Morning from Occupy Boston!

Stories of the Day: “Occupy lite?” They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but buyer beware: some things that sound like Occupy might be imitation.  “American Spring” is an Occupy term, but “99% Spring” is not. A coalition of groups including MoveOn.org are providing “99% Spring Trainings.” Some feel this is co-opting the ideas of the movement, and reportedly these trainings deliberately exclude the model of consensus-based, horizontal democracy. However, the newly-formed Occupy Arlington just passed a resolution to bring in a 99% Spring training for themselves. In Los Angeles on March 31, there was an art show called “All In for the 99%” with the participation of many celebrities; but the money raised went to the American Dream Foundation, also known as Rebuild the Dream, a Democratic organization – not Occupy. On the other hand, or so it seems, a new website called “Occupy.com” went live on April 3. Despite the .com domain name, it is a non-profit which describes itself as: “a new media channel that will amplify the voices of Occupy. We use media to call for social, economic and environmental justice. We seek to inspire resistance, engagement and the creation of the new world we imagine … [we are] independent and non-profit. We consist of a small but growing group of dedicated occupiers working in solidarity with the movement. We are supported by a combination of donations and volunteerism. There is no GA or Spokes Council overseeing us, but we are morally accountable to the movement as a whole.” [from the website] Co-opting, or demonstrating that Occupy is changing public discourse? You decide…

    Other Occupies/Protests:

    • On April 1, Occupy SF occupied a building that had been vacant for 5 years, with the intention of turning it into a center for health services and education, but they were raided today and 80 arrests were made.
    • Occupy Worcester will be joining in the National Day of Protest and Action in regards to public transportation on April 4th. At 3:00 PM, they will gather outside of Union Station with signs and flyers to protest the mishandling of public transportation in America, especially, on a local level, the underfunding of the WRTA and the proposed budget cuts and fare increases for the MBTA. They will have an open stack around 4:30 for people to share their thoughts and feelings about public transportation in America. (see below for Occupy Boston’s events planned for tomorrow).

“In the beginning of a change, the patriot is a scarce man, and brave and hated and scorned. When his cause succeeds the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a patriot.” —Mark Twain

    Wednesday, April 4, 2012

    Event Highlight:

3pm-11:30pm Occupy Boston – National Day of Action for Public Transportation, Massachusetts State House

1 p.m. – MassDOT Board Meeting (Transportation Building, 10 Park Plaza):   After 31 public hearings and hearing the testimony of thousands of MBTA riders, the MBTA board’s final proposal — a 23% fare hike, plus cuts to bus lines  – is an unacceptable attempt to balance borrowed debt on the backs of seniors, students, and the unemployed.   Join allies and organizations from across Boston in saying “No!” to the most recent round of cuts and hikes.
3-5 p.m. – People’s Assembly at the State House — Following that meeting, join us at the State House for a people’s hearing on the future of public transit!   Tell Deval Patrick and Speaker De Leo that we need a long-term funding solution for transit in Massachusetts.    We’ll take our demands to the halls of the State House, where the legislature has steadfastly refused to intervene in coming up with a state-wide transit solution that benefits ALL of the 99 percent.
5-8 p.m. – Rally in Support of Public Transportation —   An evening of teach-ins, speak-outs, music, food, and celebration on the State House steps.   What’s next for the T?   What happened to get us into this mess?   Join us for an evening of public celebration to demand a comprehensive transit plan for the 99 percent!
8-11:30 p.m. – Commemoration of Martin Luther King, Jr.   April 4th is the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s groundbreaking speech “Beyond Vietnam:  Breaking the Silence”  in which he explained his understanding that “America would never invest the necessary funds or energies in rehabilitation of its poor so long as adventures like Vietnam continue to draw men and skills and money like some demonic destructive suction tube.”   Exactly one year after this speech, as he built momentum for a general strike, Dr. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968.    We will end by observing this day and remembering a great visionary by continuing his fight for economic inequality and an end to war.

Occupy Boston Daily Digest for 4-3-12

    Good Morning from Occupy Boston!

Stories of the Day: Big Brother is listening: The ACLU has just released the results of public records requests to hundreds of police departments around the country asking them about their cell phone tracking policies. Many of the approximately 200 law enforcement agencies that responded said they track cell phones without a warrant. Check out this brilliant chart that helps you track propaganda and manipulations of rhetoric and logic: “Rhetological” Fallacies. And Anonymous supports the May 1 General Strike: A Day Without the 99%. For their video, click here. Occupy Boston has a day of events planned for May 1, stay tuned!

Other Occupies/Protests: On March 31, countries across Europe held M31, European Day of Action Against Capitalism. Their call for action and official website is here.

“The trouble is that once you see it, you can’t unsee it. And once you’ve seen it, keeping quiet, saying nothing, becomes as political an act as speaking out. There’s no innocence. Either way, you’re accountable.” Arundhati Roy

    Volunteer Opportunities/Announcements:

    • The People of Color Working Group (POC WG) is working on having one Occupy Boston General Assembly per week in different neighborhoods around Boston, stay tuned, we may be coming to your neighborhood!

    Upcoming Events:

Wednesday, April 4, 3pm-11:30pm Occupy Boston – National Day of Action for Public Transportation, Massachusetts State House

Public transportation is a right and must be accessible to all. Service cuts and fare hikes will have a devastating and disproportionate impact on low-income communities, communities of color, students, workers, seniors and the environment. We say NO TO PRIVATIZATION of our common resources and NO MORE EXCUSES! We will not accept any funding strategies that attempt to divide the 99% against each other or shift the burden onto the backs of the 99%: the poor and working classes. End the wars and tax the rich! On April 4th, we will stand together to demand public transportation for the 99%. If our call is not answered and the necessary funds redirected, it will only add to the growing body of evidence that our government no longer represents us.
