MAY 1st DAY OF ACTIONS PLANNED FOR EAST BOSTON, CHELSEA, AND EVERETT BEGINNING AT 2:30 PM
May 1, 2016 marks the 127th anniversary of the nationwide general strike for the eight hour day!
International Workers’ Day also known as “May Day”, is celebrated around the world to honor the struggles for workers’ rights. On May 1st, 1886, and in the days that followed, Chicago police opened fire, attacking thousands of workers on strike to improve their working conditions among the demands was the forty-hour week.
This year’s commemoration and celebration comes as workers and families of all backgrounds face unprecedented political challenges on issues ranging from budget cuts to education, healthcare and human services, to the fight for labor unions to housing justice and the struggle for undocumented workers.
Workers across the world have stood together to unite all of our struggles because “An injury to one is an injury to all!”

You are invited to a special Jobs NOT Jails Statewide Strategy Meeting on Saturday, May 7 from 12:00-2:30 at 150 Mt. Vernon Street, second Floor Dorchester, MA 02125
The meeting will focus on:
1. Both celebrating and learning from the March 30th signing into law of the repeal of the $500 fine and up to 5 year waiting period for people to regain their driver’s licenses.
2. What we can still accomplish between now and the Legislature adjourning on July 31: Several bills, especially one to raise the threshold for what’s considered a felony for theft from $250 to $1500, have passed the Senate and are pending in the House. We are trying to win $2 Million in initial funding for a program for job training for ex-prisoners and court involved youth via a budget amendment to really put an emphasis on the jobs part of Jobs Not Jails.
3. The BIG, BIG chance this fall for major criminal justice reform through the CSG Justice Center Justice Reinvestment Initiative that could greatly lessen numbers of people incarcerated and increase jobs. The Governor, House Speaker, and Senate President will jointly decide how much or how little to propose in terms of criminal justice reform legislation for the next legislative session by this December. We will talk about strategy to impact what they decide. Learn more about this initiative here.
Food will be provided. We hope to see you there!

Whistle blower Christopher Aaron will speak about his experiences as an analyst for the drone assassination program in Iraq and Afghanistan from 2006 to 2009 and excerpts from the film “Drone” will be shown Thursday, May 5 at 6:45 at the Central Square Library, 45 Pearl St, Cambridge.
Aaron is a former counter-terrorism officer for the CIA and the DoD. He resigned in 2009 due to ethical objections with the trajectories of the wars. After the presentation, there will be plenty of time for questions as well as suggestions for what citizens can do to stop the drone assassination program.
