Ferguson 2 Fields Corner: Mike Brown Unity March Against Police Terror
Tuesday, August 9 at 6:30 PM – 9:30 PM
Fields Corner, Doherty-Gibson Playground, Corner of Dorchester Ave and Park St , MA
On August 9, 2014, a movement was born when a community rose up in protest of the killing of Black teenager Michael Brown in the Canfield Apartment complex of Ferguson, MO by police officer Darren Wilson. Since that moment, the awareness of the all too pervasive and frequent deadly use of force by police officers, especially against Black people has dominated the public discourse. In protest after protest, killing after killing, in city after city, this conflict has been raging.
On July 5th 2016 Alton Sterling was pinned down in Baton Rouge, Louisiana by two white police officers, Blaine Salamoni and Howie Lake, and shot to death. Less than 48 hours later in Falcon Heights, Minnesota another Black man, Philando Castile was shot by police officer Jeronimo Yanez 4 times during a traffic stop in front of his girlfriend Lavish Reynolds and her 4 year old daughter. And on July 20, 2016, police officer Jonathan Aledda shot behavior therapist Charles Kinsey while he was taking care of autistic patient in his care.
The world has seen yet again what the police in the U.S. do as routine to Black people: they murder them in cold blood. Since 2014 a little over 3,000 people have been killed by the police and less than 1% of these officers get indicted, let alone convicted and sent to jail for their crimes.
On July 13, Mass Action Against Police Brutality called a Unity March Against Police Terror to protest these most recent killings and highlight many of Boston’s and Massachusetts’ own victims of police violence. This march of 4,000 was diverse, disciplined, loud, but peaceful, resulting in no arrests. It started at the Boston Police HQ and marched through neighborhoods in Roxbury to an enthusiastic response.
In a follow-up meeting of about 200 people, recognizing the need to amplify our voices, Mass Action Against Police Brutality has called another unity march this August 9 on the 2nd anniversary of the killing of Mike Brown.
This is an appeal for your solidarity and participation in a major mobilization on Tuesday, August 9th, 2016. This will be another important step in building a broad movement of all walks of life to demand the end of racist police abuse and murder from our society as well as racism in our courts that allow these murderers to go free. We hope you will be among the many that will stand up and be counted during this moment of truth.
