On February 2nd, 2012, members of Occupy Boston gathered to support KnockOut Barstool in the quad between the Speare Hall & Stetson East Buildings) for a Speak-Out against Barstool Sports. Braving the cold, many in the crowd got up to share personal stories of mistreatment and concerns about the well-being of women in society.
The crowd listening to one of the speakers. David “El Presidente” Portnoy had tried to address the crowd, speaking over someone else in the process, before being removed from the stage.
The march winded its way from Northeastern University all the way to Newbury Street. Many local colleges took part, including Tufts, Boston University, Boston College and Emerson.
Protesters gathered in front of House Of Blues on Lansdowne Street. They remained here for at least 45 minutes, speaking out against rape culture, perpetuated by Barstool Sports, and specifically against comments made by David “El Presidente” Portnoy over the internet.
As the protest began to move down Lansdowne Street, many of the ‘Bros’ of Barstool Sports decided to show the protesters what they think of their efforts. The crowd eventually made it’s way back to Northeastern University.

This article has unfortunately conflated Occupy Boston members with those associated with a student organized group protesting rape culture. It is unfortunate that you have labeled these protesters with the greater Occupy movement, although there are some members of KnockOut Barstool (the proper name of the student group protesting this event) that are also members of Occupy Boston. While the press coverages should be heralded as a positive change in our social narrative, this movement is autonomous and not associated with the Occupy movement; therefore, the support from Occupy and other like-minded organizations for the actions by KOBarstool against the perpetuation of rape-culture should be viewed strictly as a testament to the importance of this issue, as well as the effectiveness of a pro-equality stance.
Everyone relates Occupy Boston to Knockout Barstool because OB more than once came out in full support of this movement. Way to go OB. Not only did you launch yourselves completely away from the actual message of Occupy, but you did it in support of a dumb shit movement like Knockout Barstool. Time for a new PR team, stat.
THERE IS NO ONE MESSAGE OF OCCUPY! That was the whole POINT! Occupy is an OUTLET to assess grievances. You obviously have NO familiarity with Occupy Wall St. WHATSOEVER because if you had shown up to ONE general assembly in your freaking lifetime you would realize THERE IS NO ONE MESSAGE OF OCCUPY! Occupy endorses KOB for a good reason; KOB calls out misogyny and rape culture where it is exceedingly obvious. KOB will continue to receive Occupy support as we all work to spread awareness about a plethora of issues.
There are so many bigger problems in the world with barstool. The only thing you are doing is drawing more attention to the website. There is not a shot in hell that you are going to shut down the website. All your name does is draw attention to Barstool and make them more money. All press is good press.
Friendly Amendment:
We at Knockout Barstool thank you for the solidarity; we need as much as we can get!
However, despite the partial overlap between Knockout Barstool and Occupy Boston in both views and members, we are an independent movement and wish to be recognized.
Thanks,
Your pals at KObarstool
*wish to be recognized as such.
As much as we appreciate the support and solidarity of Occupy Boston, we at Knockout Barstool would like to stress that we are an independent movement.
I feel so bad for those of you thst are affiliated in any way with knockout barstool. Hopefully one day you will all wake up & join reality. I pray for you. lol
OB and kockout barstool=unattractive, insecure people who one day actually will have to work and get a job not based on their gender, race, or ethnic background, but actually based on their ability. I laugh myself to sleep when you losers protest and litter at a public park or overdose. Too bad your movements are all failures…..now go quit your job and be a protester, oh wait you never had a job.
Luv ya later
unfortunately ladies, this is america. and in america you have the right to free speech. ive learned to bite my tongue and not be myself around new people. fuck that. when someone is defeated, or looses badly, i consider them getting raped. saying someone got killed or murdered when they lose at something is ok though? nope. either everything is ok to say or nothing is.
seriously, grow up. Barstoolsports.com is a hilarious blog. nothing more to it. you can’t hold them responsible for what others do. I’m a women, I don’t think they support rape culture or put down women! it’s comedy! needs to be taken with a grain of salt. I read it daily and have many male friends that do as well and they happen to be exceptional human beings, and they have never commited any hate crimes, or crimes against women (shocking, isn’t it!?) so grow the f up and move on.
