The OB Media Rundown for 1/2/12

Phoenix: Couple Pics and Scenes from #OccupyBoston First Night Festivities

I hope that the Boston Police Department had a few undercover officers embedded in the Occupy Boston First Night operation. Whoever they sent deep into the heart of last evening’s activism would have found a whole mess of juicy goods to bring back to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office, which is apparently investigating its local Occupy outpost.

Mass. lawmakers may look at cost of college

With nearly two-thirds of college students in Massachusetts carrying debt of about $25,000, concerns are growing about whether students and insitutions can keep up.
    . . .

Student loans have been an issue among Occupy Wall Street protesters, who feel extreme measures are needed to get true reform. The Occupy Student Debt campaign, launched in November, encourages members to pledge to default on their student loans if the movement can get 1 million pledges.

“You’re not going to get reform by keep paying,” said John Murphy, an Occupy Boston protester who lost his job as a carpenter and took a semester of classes at Cape Cod Community College before quitting to join the movement. “You’re just clearly showing people you are a slave to society, a slave to the dollar pretty much.”

Candidate cites his work with Occupy Boston as he announces campaign for Barney Frank’s seat

Mr. Levine said in his announcement that he addressed Occupy Boston at its encampment in Dewey Square, and has been participating in two of its working groups, particularly on removing the influence of money from politics.

“This is a natural extension of my efforts for the ballot question creating the Massachusetts ‘Clean Elections Law,’ which the Legislature regrettably repealed in 2003. Public financing of election campaigns can lead to the enactment of many of the laudable reforms sought by Occupy Boston, for it should result in lawmakers who are responsive to the 99 percent, rather than exclusively to the 1 percent,” Mr. Levine said.

    GA Refines Mutual Aid Proposal

The following proposal reached consensus at the General Assembly of Occupy Boston on January 1, 2012:

    Mutual Aid Amendment Proposal

    • This proposal will supersede the previous Mutual Aid proposal of $5,000 that was consented to by the Occupy Boston General Assembly on December 20th, 2011.
    • The purpose of the aid provided by this proposal is to provide transitional assistance to Occupy Boston activists who were most physically affected by the eviction of the Dewey Square encampment and the support network it provided. This will help members transition away from life in the encampment and also help them be more productive activists. The aid provided by this proposal is temporary. It will end January 29 or when the allocated funds of $4400 are exhausted, whichever comes first.
    • Assistance proposed will include and be limited to: T-Passes, Food, Cell phones assistance, Occupant Hosting assistance
    • To ensure that recipients of mutual aid are active members of Occupy Boston and the Dewey Square encampment, individuals must have signatures of two sponsors from the working groups in which the individual is an active member in order to receive assistance.
    • All requests for aid must be made in writing and submitted to assigned members of the Mutual Aid Working Group (MAWG) at General Assemblies or MAWG meetings. Mutual Aid Working Group Members will review requests and then request the approved amount of money from the Financial Aid Working Group (FAWG). Aid will then be dispersed by MAWG at the following General Assembly. Other forms of aid will be dispersed via working groups, as described below.
    • As this proposal is meant to provide transitional assistance, aid from this proposal will be available until January 29th, four weeks from now.
    • Funds donated with the Mutual Aid WePay Button will be used to offset the $4,400 taken out of the General Fund, up to $4,400. Nearly $700 has been spent from the previous Mutual Aid proposal; this amount will be subtracted from the final week that this presented proposal is active.
    • We ask the Media Working Group to help promote Occupy Boston Mutual Aid to help generate donations to it.
    • Income checks are not required. We ask that those seeking aid are in need of assistance and remember that others are seeking funds as well.
    • For members seeking individual support from their working groups, requests must be put in writing to the working group, and MAWG will collect written requests at General Assemblies in order to provide accountability and oversight. Continue reading “GA Refines Mutual Aid Proposal” »

OB Closes Fund for Traveling Occupiers

The General Assembly of Occupy Boston consented to the following proposal January 1, 2012:

On December 13, 2011, Occupy Boston’s General Assembly consented to a proposal to pay for travel for Boston occupiers who chose to travel to other encampments, including Providence, or Washington, DC.

To date, Occupy Boston has spent $3,325 on this proposal.

In addition, a 12/20 Mutual Aid proposal, amended on 1/1/12, suggests spending up to $4400 by January 29.

Since the eviction, Occupy Boston has earned $1840 in donations.

I propose to freeze the travel proposal, immediately, and render it no longer viable, and no longer pay anyone for travel, excepting two return tickets to be bought by 1/2/12 for two occupiers traveling to Washington, DC for an approved reason.

Occupy Boston Sends Out 2011 In Occupy Style!

Yesterday, Occupy Boston sent out 2011 in style. In the early afternoon the Info Tent working group spread out around the Boston Commons and Copley area talking with people about Occupy Boston and handing out “We are the 99%” buttons.

By mid-afternoon, the Occupy Boston Signs working group dropped a banner out off the Community Church building in Copley.

In the late afternoon, the Occupy Boston Screen Printing Guild set up shop at the Community Church in Copley and screen-printed hundreds of items, including bandannas, t-shirts, and patches.

From 5pm-8pm in the same location, Occupy Boston held an open house, where people mingled, made signs, and noshed. Several people joined the First Night parade with Occupy signs.

At 8pm, many of us gathered outside at Copley to witness the Women’s Caucus of Occupy Boston amazing “art” event, which was projection of a video onto the side of a building. People chanted along with the text of the video through the first couple of showings and the video looped for two-hours. Watch the video from last night. ‘Action in the street’ – Occupy Boston invites revelers to pen resolutions

It wasn’t exactly Occupy First Night, but the self-dubbed 99 percenters managed to lay claim to a share of yesterday’s citywide New Year’s celebration. “Action in the street is what we’re all about,” said Ben Janos, an Occupy Boston activist, as he and several protestors handed out “We are the 99%” buttons in Copley Square.

    Boston says goodbye to 2011

But not everyone came to celebrate. The crowd included members of Occupy Boston, the protest group evicted earlier this month from their two-month encampment on Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway. A small group stood with a red wagon draped in a miniature canvas tent emblazoned with the message, “You can’t evict an idea.”

“We really want to get the message out that we’re still here,” said Kevin Maley, 27, of South Boston as he handed out “We are the 99%” buttons. “Our objective is to keep the movement going and connect with people.”

Movement Man – Meet Chris Faraone, Occupy reporter for the Boston Phoenix

Over the past few bleary-eyed months, with little concern for health, nutrition, or REM cycles, Faraone has spent almost every waking hour honing his insight into America’s economic counterculture. He has covered Occupy like a one-man swarm: embedding full-time at Boston’s Dewey Square encampment; visiting other movements around the country; juggling feature stories, blog posts, radio spots, and Twitter fights. The recent eviction and dispersal of the Occupy Boston HQ turned into a marathon two-day reporting session interrupted only by a three-hour nap and a French Dip sandwich. “I’ve stayed up twenty-four hours in the past couple of weeks more than I ever have in my life,” he says. “I’m so used to holding my piss at this point that I forget to go.”
