Occupy Boston is looking for people to help manage the hundreds of visitors, volunteer requests and media inquiries we have been struggling to manage.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: We need folks that are available to help manage the Occupy Boston site and various groups and tasks associated with the project. Everyone has to have a laid back sense of tolerance for a process that involves building consensus with wide ranging opinions and styles. Militant bossy people need not apply. But if you’re kind and fun and have a desire to participate in a revolution, please let us know what you like to do and what your availability is.
Types of work:
SITE OPERATIONS: we need people ONSITE to run errands, and help with the operation of the camp. We need a few committed managers, but also need folks that can be onsite to help with emptying trash and miscellaneous chores. If you have skills as a handy person, even better. We are often struggling with trying to set up tarps as tents that will withstand the rain/wind and other various weather-related and site management challenges. The ideal person for management will have have a cell phone and mobile email and will have lots of patience and creative energy. Assertive, but non-confrontational, very patient personalities required.
WELCOME DESK OPERATIONS: we need people to sit at the welcome table in 1-2 hour shifts. If you’re friendly and enjoy talking to the public, and can remember a few “messages” that we are trying to convey, please come help.
VOLUNTEER TOUR GUIDES: we need people who are supportive of the cause to walk visitors around and show them the camp. We envision that the
STAGE MANAGERS: we need people with experience managing and/or being on stage to help manage a smooth flow to the comings and goings of speakers, musicans, etc. Some technical experience with a PA is helpful, but not necessary. Please be prepared to commit to 2 hour shifts. Assertive, but non-confrontational, and very patient personalities required.
VIRTUAL WORK-AT-HOME VOLUNTEER PROJECT MANAGERS: if you work stuck at a desk but want to help, this work might be for you. We need people who can help for a couple hours a day chasing down supplies, making phone calls, answering emails, managing lists, etc. If you are proficient on the computer and can manage lists of tasks, and are OK talking to strangers and helping find people and things, please let us know.
FINANCE AND POLITICAL SCIENCE SPECIALISTS: Must be objective and patient to work with groups through complex public policy and social challenges. Must have warm weather gear and be able to stay onsite for hours. Ability to post/blog respectfully is helpful, but not necessary. But the ability to respect disparate viewpoints is required. The ability to deconstruct labels and sort through language differences to dig out the core goals is very very helpful. Any length of time. 10 minutes or 10 hours. Please come on down…

Contact by leaving a message here or this an email/better place?
http://www.occupyboston.wikispaces.com is the best place to gather and start creating online working groups focused on specific issues.
Hey, so I made these fake dollar bills to try and promote the #occupyboston movement. They say 99 on them instead of 1 dollar, the ninety nine of america instead of the united states of america etc etc. This link is to a printable PDF that people can download, print out, and cut up. It looks really good on sticker paper which is what me and my friends have been doing. http://minus.com/mJkl2SrtW
I am happy to do virtual project managing.
I put this idea on the Occupy Boston FB page, but that’s a busy place. I think Occupy Boston needs an “Occupy Boston Homefront.” To manage donations, lists, emails, etc. I would like to volunteer for this effort. I am a part-time freelancer, my limiting factor is that I have a 3 year old so hours of work on-site are impractical (as I would have to simultaneously supervise my child and that’s not good for anyone.) However, I can certainly deal with off-site logistics as well as make frequent short trips to onsite. I would like to talk to someone about this – we’ll be down tomorrow for a visit and maybe I’ll find someone to talk to more about it then.
The place to do this is http://www.occupyboston.wikispaces.com
It is for people to organize and collaborate remotely.
Dina, please add me on FB so that we con potentially coordinate with eachother.
Done.
Would love to help with lots of these things! Who do we contact?
How should we contact you?
How do we volunteer?
I can do virtual at home stuff. I work remotely at home 90% of the time, and can easily squeeze any of this into my daily routine. Contact me at gene@texarrakis.com .
I am here ready to help. I started a Facebook site called “Adopt a Protestor” last night. My idea is to match protestors with people that want to sit, but can’t. Please reach out to me so that I can begin matching. I am looking to be matched with someone and am looking forward to it. I want this to be simple and easy. I’d like for each protestor that wants to be “adopted” or “supported” to please reach out to me with what it is you specifically need for support. If you are in an office job, disabled, or unable to protest for some other reason..PLEASE consider adopting a protestor. The days will get longer and colder as the time goes by. These brave people need all the support they can get, but if it can be more individualized…that’d be great! This is not about money…it can be as simple as dropping off cough drops or picking up some laundry from that person and returning it. I’ll be making runs into Boston (I’m about 7 miles North) as needed. If anyone is interested in partnering with me on this venture..please reach out. I also want to add that I’d love to work on getting supplies on a more generalized basis to the protestors, but would like a contact phone number or e-mail as I do this. I am so passionate about this cause. I feel proud to even be able to witness this!
This is a terrific idea, spreading it.
We are going down tomorrow for a visit/donation. Let’s chat – these folks are busy, but maybe I can find someone willing to talk about it down there face to face.
You need to set that wall to open and allow messaging maybe? Also, I’m going to go view the wiki. But I love your idea. One-on-one support.
Hi Dina,
I have my settings set to keep the protestors and those that want to support them private. I have already gotten some nasty FB emails (Which I can only block out) What I don’t want is for those to end up on the wall. I also don’t want the privacy of the protestors to be compromised. Do you think that there is a better way to adjust my settings? I can set up a blog on WordPress or Blogspot, but it just seems like FB is so user friendly. I’ll see you tonight my friend!
This is a great idea, I am at work during the wk and would like to be there but am unable too. I want to show my support!
I’d love to jump in on this idea! I have a 2 yo and a kindergartner, so it’s hard for me to go and actually “occupy” very much. But stopping in, sending or dropping off supplies, doing some laundry/errands I can definitely do on a small scale! Love this idea!
I have posted a thread about the “Adopt a Protester” idea on the wiki here (in almost certainly the wrong place) http://occupyboston.wikispaces.com/message/view/Home/43808848
Let’s do this. Let’s not give them the job of organizing US, let’s organize ourselves FOR them.
Can you use the wiki page for this? Also, what’s the news on where you are with this today?
You can organize, gather, and make project pages at http://www.occupyboston.wikispaces.com
Anyone can edit. You can discuss, etc.
A point that needs to be brought up here is that the Federal Reserve Act of 1913 needs to be repealed. This act establishes the Federal Reserve as the place the government of the US goes to borrow money here in the US. The power of the US government to create paper money without borrowing it has rendered the government castrated in its powers. There would be no interest payments due to anyone if the US created its own money. Also, see http://www.webofdebt.com and the book “The Web of Debt” by Brown. Brown also states that a system of state owned banks in each state would allow for the interest paid by ordinary citizens who borrow from a state bank could be used as additional tax income to the state. The state of North Dakota has state owned banks and they have a surplus of money in their state and are doing well in their economy. The only way to reverse the Federal Reserve Act of 1913 is through boycotts, strikes, civil disobedience because historically the government workers have been killed and their deaths covered up and shrouded in mystery. The bankers are a powerfully lobby because they buy their way into the politicians to represent the bankers interests only. Good Luck and God Bless. I’m praying for you.
Sincerely,
Ann Bouchard
I am also interested in helping but I’m not sure how to be in touch.
